Cerealto Siro Foods Publishes Detailed Policy To Source 100% Cage-Free Eggs Globally By 2025

The Open Wing Alliance (OWA) announces that Cerealto Siro Foods, a Madrid-based global manufacturer of cookies, cereals, and pasta products, has recommitted to sourcing 100% eggs from cage-free hens worldwide and has publicly shared its implementation plans, including sourcing 10% cage-free eggs by 2023, 50% by 2024, and 100% by 2025. The move comes after a global campaign by OWA, an international coalition working to end the abuse of chickens worldwide.

“We applaud Cerealto Siro Foods for upholding its ESG priorities of animal welfare and ethical supply chains and sharing its implementation plan for sourcing 100% cage-free eggs globally,” says Jennie Hunter, Senior Campaigns Coordinator, Open Wing Alliance. “We are calling on PepsiCo to follow Cerealto’s lead and report on their public commitment to sell 100% cage-free eggs worldwide. Failure to follow through on their cage-free egg commitment or at least report progress means putting consumer trust at risk while fueling the perception that their brands do not prioritize ethical supply chains.”

The Open Wing Alliance is also calling on Kellogg’s to publish its plan to source 100% cage-free eggs in its global supply chain. The manufacturer made a cage-free commitment in 2016 but has only reported 0.5% cage-free after all this time.

As animal welfare becomes an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) priority for companies across the globe, manufacturers and their suppliers are rising to the challenge. More than 2,400 companies, including 146 of the largest global corporations, have made cage-free egg commitments, and one-third of those companies are manufacturers. Leading manufacturers like Barilla, Giovanni Rana, and Lindt & Sprüngli have switched to 100% cage-free eggs globally, propelling industry change.
